Thank you for this article. It seems people are still falling for the "unique," although a huge disservice to a new litter, their potential owners and for those who have worked for decades and more to preserve the breed standard of a Yorkie. A dog that can be registered with the AKC. If people would just educate themselves about "these breeders," the world be better. I just met our newest family addition. She's a "teacup." She was just a couple hundred dollars less than my Spinone Italiano who is showing, will be a CH by 9 months. We picked him up at 8 weeks, puppies are decided upon for the family, not other way around. He was housebroken and sleeps about 24 hrs. straight at night -- from a litter of 11. Has a purpose in the role of this world. His mother is a Russian import to improve the breeding pool; both parents are grand champions. I have 24 hr. help with either breeder and for any reason, excuse, I can return my boy to the breeder and he stays in my registered name. They are a very old European breed. We trained GSD for the blind and for yrs. now I see online breeders who will get you a dog in 24 hrs.; the network of these people is astonishing. No OFA on parent's hips, no cardiac tests, thyroid or anything done on the parents and the prices are ridiculous. And, I love that breed. We were in bloodhounds for 20 yrs. and I'm not opposed to backyard breeding when people study and learn what they are doing -- especially because they are potentially bringing a huge litter of pups into this world. But, this cross-breeding of purebreds -- even though producing darling, beautiful dogs is a disservice. Purebred dogs have caused the human race to survive and we should respect that little fact. And to take an already darling, little Yorkie and make them smaller -- increasing health problems and selling them for prices of pups whose parents went to Westminster; stupidity. Out of all the gorgeous AKC dogs, there's not one breed that tickles your fancy, you have to go for something "different?"

I have a teacup Yorkie. He is 16 months old now, but has a portosystemic shunt (meaning everything he eats is toxic as it bypasses his liver to filter and goes straight to his blood stream and as a result through his brain causing extreme neurological behavior. Walking backwards, falling over, glazed eyes). We are at the point of deciding to watch him suffer or send him over the Rainbow Bridge. Destroying us. His neurological events are increasing. When do you make that call? I’ve done it for ten of my dogs, but they were seniors and very ill. I am just having a real struggle with my baby boy.

My Honey Bee was 21 years old when she died of natural causes. She was a 4 lb Yorkie and and was healthy all her life. Eventho' she was tiny we always took her outside for her daily walks. She looked so forward to them. We cooked her fresh chicken and a teaspoon of rice for dinner and she had her kibbles throughout the day if she was hungry. Occasionally we gave her Nutracal supplement as her Vet recommended. Losing her was so devastating we got a toy male and female. They produced two litters of pups totaling 11. We kept 2 girls. We are down to one of the daughters who is 15 and the father who is 17. He is getting old and feeble. Before anything happens to him we have an order in for a teacup who will be ready for adoption the end of Feb... We are owners who are fully aware of the cost it takes to own a teacup Yorkie. Please don't adopt a Yorkie unless you are prepared to spend whatever it takes to keep him/her healthy. Your puppy deserves the best because she/he will give you the best. Yorkie Owners for over 30 years.

I am so sorry for your loss, by now you have had some time to heal. I lost my beautiful baby girl this past Sunday, she developed a mass on her neck and fast forward a month aggressive cancer took her life, she passed in her sleep next to me. I am extremely heartbroken & feel cheated because she only was with me for 10 years, I’ve had her since she was 6 weeks old. I saved her from a puppy mill.. I miss her more everyday she was my soulmate. My baby will live in my heart forever. If & when I am ready I will want to adopt another yorkie because their the best babies, extremely loyal, lovable & full of life. The very best.

Demand for small Yorkies is not going away, so why don't professional breeders actively work toward breeding healthy small Yorkies?

The financial incentives are there.

Most of all, it is in the animal's best interest to be properly bred for health and lifespan, not just size.

I know this would takes generations and a large population to draw from. Perhaps even some cross breeding to bring in new genes from other small breeds. (It takes a diversity of genes to draw from to create a quality new breed.) But there is no reason that it can't be done except time and effort and coordination between breeders.

I have a three year old yorkie who weighs 1pound, 14 ounces. I also have her mama, who weighs 6-7 pounds and Daddy weighs 3 pounds. At birth she was 3ounces. Her litter mates all weighed in at 9-10 ounces. I hand fed her as she was so tiny she could not fit her mouth onto her mama to feed. Zevah was the first born, and due to her size and some oddities the vet and I felt she was premature, and because of this
we were concerned about her size and if she would thrive and grow.
Everyone oohs and ahhs when they see her, and ask if I plan to breed her. There is no way I would breed this tiny miracle, the chance of losing her is to high, and I do not want to bring anymore tea cup sized pups that WILL have many health issues. People adpot them thinking, "how cute" it takes more than love to keep these ones alive.
She already suffers with a bad patella and has issues with her trachea, she is also losing her teeth. I just love this little girl, but wonder if I should have let nature take her because even at the age of 3, I see a lot of health issues ahead for us. The little pups are adorable, but everyone needs to think of the health of these miniture fur babies.
