Throughout the years we have been truly creative about decorating our homes, courtyards, ourselves and of course the kids who undoubtedly are the biggest fans of the festival.
But in this article we’ll not talk about the kid’s and adult’s costumes, nor for decorating the house and courtyard. We’ll rather dedicate it to our loving Yorkies and share some really cute small dog Halloween costumes ideas with you.
We are sure you will agree that masking for Halloween is no longer just for people. Nowadays many people are looking for the most authentic costume for their Yorkies.

The journey of finding a Halloween costume for our Yorkie Zuzi
The idea of writing this article came after we started looking for costumes and preparing our Yorkie Zuzi for the festival. We didn’t want her to fall behind with all the fun so we had to find a proper costume that would transform her into a tiny hairy character matching the theme dresses and decorations at home and family.
We already knew the theme of the family so we only had to find her the matching costume. We thought it‘s going to be easy but it came out harder than expected.
Happily, in the end, we found what we were looking for and now Zuzi is all dressed up for the party!
In pursuit of costumes in the local stores
Knowing exactly what we want, we started exploring the local stores within the city and hoping we will get the desired costume sooner.
Firstly we visited our favorite pet stores where we usually buy the needed supplies for Zuzi. Unfortunately, we could not find anything interesting there because they either had only a few models or if they had various costumes, they were not exactly what we were looking for.
So after a couple of hours lost in driving between the usual spots and not finding anything special we returned home kind of desperate.
Zuzi was also already too tired of traveling and trying different costumes (which seems to be a little annoying for her) so we knew that we need another action plan.
Living in a fairly small city we knew that the available pet stores are limited and the easiest way to check them out was through the internet.
So we checked all their websites to find that none or very few of them have carnival costumes listed which made our disappointment even bigger.
But we were not going to give up until our Zuzi is all dressed up exactly as we were planning. So another “genius” idea came to our mind and we started calling all the pet stores we just checked in internet asking them if they have some items like carnival costumes which are not listed on their websites.
And “YAAAY,” most of them said they just received the themed dresses and didn’t have time to upload them online.
In that happy moment, filled up with optimistic thoughts we decided that it is better if we give a break to Zuzi and continue our mission on the next day.
So once again we were back in the car hitting the streets and visiting every single pet store we had in our list.
But the day was passing and our list with stores was getting shorter and shorter. Zuzi was getting nervous already refusing to try the various dresses which were not the most suitable but at least they were some kind of solution for us.
Believe it or not, our list with stores within the city was all checked and it was again time to go home without a dress for our poor Zuzi.
We are not sure about her, but we were so desperate that we started discussing the possibility to go and buy one of the costumes we already tried even though it is not what we wanted.
“At least it is something,” we said and Zuzi will not be the only one without a Halloween theme dress.
Rent or Buy a Yorkie Halloween costume?
Following our unsuccessful mission so far, we started discussing other options in order to get the perfect party outfit for our little princess.
A friend of ours told us that last year he had a similar problem finding the perfect dress for Halloween for his loving Shih Tzu.
After having more or less the same trip across the city he finally found the desired costume in a studio where he could rent it. And that really made sense for him.
We liked the idea and without thinking too much jumped into the car and headed to the studio. We quickly checked on the internet and we found that there are two of them in the city which have rental costumes so we wanted to check them both out.
And we did. To be honest, their collections were not so wide but the items were really interesting and we almost made our choice.
Then we went home for final thoughts and we started discussing the key points. The biggest advantage was that we’ll take the costume, use it for the day and then return it back. That way it will not be the next rag that we’ll have to find a place at home afterward.
But another thing was bothering us. We knew that this is an item that has been used by someone else’s dog before. And what was that dog? Was it clean and healthy? Was the costume washed properly (We mean PROPERLY) after the use?
Another issue we found was the rental price. Surprisingly it was not that cheaper than if we would go and buy a new one. Which really didn’t make sense to us. If we are going to spend almost the same bucks for a rental costume, why don’t we just buy it?
All those questions were going through our heads and stopping us to go, take the costume from the studio and complete our mission successfully.
Custom made Halloween costumes for Yorkies
Obviously, we didn’t go for the rental of costume. Another idea popped up in our minds. If people can use tailor services to order clothes, why can’t we use them to order dresses for our little hairy creatures?
We were back in the car on our way to visit the tailor studios we know and some that have been recommended to us.
We had some really pleasant chats with the dressmakers. You know, they are artists after all and conversations with them are somehow interesting and very engrossing.
So, to sum it up, if you are about the order a custom-made party dress for your Yorkie firstly you need to have an idea of exactly what you want. With this one, we didn’t have a problem because we knew it.
The problem came when we had to precisely explain it to the tailor. We tried to be as detailed as possible explaining the entire concept of our theme.
We don’t know about you but for us, this was a really hard thing to do. No matter how precise we were it seemed that the guys could not catch the entire idea or because they are artists they would always add something else and make the model too extravagant.
After spending considerable time explaining our dream party dress for Zuzi we decided that the best thing to do is if we would find the same costume (or similar) on the internet and show it to them.
That way we are going to be completely sure that in the end, we will have exactly what we want.
So dressmaker explained to us that we have to find and choose the textile ourselves because most probably they will not have suitable ones in stock and it will take time to order and deliver them.
The final detail that we discussed was the production time. Surprisingly it would take too long for such a small piece of dress. They told us that if we would pay for an express order it will take 10 days!?
That was too much time for us to wait. One reason was that if the costume is done after 10 days and somehow it doesn’t fit or simply we do not like it, we will not have any time to go and look for a new one.
Still, we have agreed that we will show them a picture and they will see if they can do it faster than 10 days. That sounded reasonable to us and we were on our way home to surf the internet for our costume.
Online stores have everything you need!
So after four days of exploring the stores, rental and tailor studios it seemed that our journey is almost over. The only thing we had to do is to find a similar carnival costume and show it to the dressmaker.
The same evening after dinner we were on the computer browsing and surfing through the online pet shops and all the collections they have.
We were like “Oh my Goodness!” .They have such a vast variety of costumes. Some of them we couldn’t even imagine that someone will make for a doggie.
We were really pleased with what we found out there. Suddenly the “Barbarian” costume that we wanted for Zuzi just appeared in one of the websites. The happiness we felt was like if we found a gold mine or something.
It was unbelievable! We spend so much time and effort to look for it in the past few days and now suddenly after 15 minutes of surfing it appeared. Exactly what we imagined and wanted!
Our first intention was to find the picture and show it to the tailor. But now, looking at the prices and delivery time this idea almost vanished from our minds.
The best thing was that they had clear instructions on how to take proper sizing. It took us about 2 minutes to measure Zuzi’s neck, back, and chest and we were ready to order.
