The fact that you are reading this article tells us that you are already considering having a new member at home.
But you better realize in advance that living with a Yorkie is not only a one of a kind pleasant experience but also a responsibility that needs to be taken seriously.
Below we’ll go through some of the key points that will help you figure if you are ready to have a cute little Yorkie at home.
Having a little puppy will surely change the look of your home. It will look more like messy, a little dirtier and that means a bit more responsibilities for you. OK, not as much as if you have a Golden Retriever for example, but still.
On the other hand, the presence of a Yorkie at home will bring you so much happiness, positive mood, and feeling of fulfillment. And if you make a list with the pros and cons, pros will surely outnumber.
Just think about the strong relationship between a kid and the puppy will have and how important it is raising your youngster.
And not only that, have you ever heard about the AAT (Animal Assisted Therapy)?
This is a method which helps people recover their physical, mental or cognitive functioning by using specially trained animals.
And part of the treatment simply involves living with a pet, where Yorkie would be just the perfect medicine.
Having this little hairy “medicine” at home will make you forget what is it to feel lonely, BELIEVE US!
The greatest secret to living a harmonious life with your Yorkie is the ability to understand the signals he gives you.
And also, don’t forget to reward the little treasure for the boundless love he will send you each day, even without words!
Key points to consider before taking a Yorkie at home
Who’s idea is to take a puppy at home?
Before you buy a Yorkie, you must be sure that all the members of your family or people you share your house with are also happy with this idea.
Many cases show that underestimating this fact can result in conflicts at home or even returning the doggie to his previous owners.
So make a family/ roommate meeting and discuss your intention freely with the other members to prevent uncomfortable situations after the new member is already at home.
Yorkies and kids younger than six years?
Young kids go crazy when Yorkies are around! But children below six years will always look at the puppy as a plush toy. This can seriously harm the Yorkie and make it think that the kid is a danger to him.
That is why the best decision in our opinion is to wait a little while until your children are able to understand that the little hairy puppy playing around is not just a toy but a tiny creature that can be seriously hurt.
And when the time comes, just bring that baby home and make your kid the happiest in the world.
Is your new couch or carpet too expensive to you?
You should be fully aware that taking a two or three-month-old pup will fill your home with joy and happiness, but also you can have some disappointing experiences.
Young Yorkie should have enough toys in the entire house that each time his teeth itches they must have something close to them to chew.
Baby teeth will be growing up to the sixth month, so those itches will be occurring daily.
And no matter if you have 100 toys scattered throughout the entire house, the “victim” of the itchy teeth can always be your couch, your shoes, all the cables on the floor (which could be dangerous), the chairs, carpet or basically everything which lies on the floor.
So we’ll ask you to think first, are you ready to sacrifice some of your favorite slippers or they are more expensive to you, and you would rather return your Yorkie to its previous owners?
Some people go crazy when they return home and see some of their belongings on the floor with these tiny holes on them. But those “attacks” towards your things will shortly be over.
As soon as the new teeth grow up, all this will be over. And your little “beast” will be satisfied chewing only his own toys.
Are you financially ready for this step?
Your family increases with one new member, and that will inevitably affect your finances. We can divide the expenses into two main categories.
1. “Startup” expenses
In this category fall all the things you must prepare and buy before you take your little puppy at home. This will include:
A really special place for your Yorkie. Choose a comfortable and big enough bed for the puppy because this is the place where he will feel safe and most probably spend the time when you are not at home.
From our experience, the first bed should be more like a budget one.
As we said before when baby Yorkie’s teeth are itching, he will enjoy chewing the soft part of his bed, and for sure it will not look as good as you want at the time of six months.
Then you can buy the real “dream” bed for your shaggy treasure.
Water and Food Bowls
You can choose them big enough so they can be used even when the “little one” gets older. Metal or plastic, not a big difference.
We prefer to use the plastic ones. They are strong enough to last for a long time. To be honest, it is more likely for you to break them rather than to be damaged by your Yorkie.
Yes, Pee Pads. Just like a little baby, young Yorkie will do pee and poo on a nappy. If you teach him to do so, of course.
It will take time until you teach little Yorkie that the proper place for pee and poo is on his pee pads and later on outside.
That is why we suggest you buy some extra detergents to minimize the unwanted smells which can occur in the early months.
After the third month when the last vaccine will be applied, the Yorkie will be able to finally see the world outside of your home.
If you want to have your friend in the restaurant or the shopping mall with you, buy him a comfortable transport bag.
This is a “must have” because your little hairy friend needs a daily brushing of his hair. That’s the way he will look and feel amazing.
2. “Fixed costs.”
There are expenses which will occur on a more or less monthly basis. Below are the most common ones:
We suggest feeding your Yorkie with the most quality food.
Roughly, a 1, 5 kilos bag will be enough for a month. If you feed doggy with quality food, there will be no need to buy extra vitamins, so we’ll exclude them at this stage.
We put the nappies here as well because you will need them up to the sixth or seventh month. After that age and a little effort from you, Yorkie will be able to hold pee and poo until you take him for a walk outside.
Let’s say that if you want to be sure all is going well with the health of your Yorkshire terrier, you should take him to the vet each month.
And not only that, vets will apply medicines for inner and outer deworming which also cost money.
Clothes and accessories
We’ve tried to cover the most common and necessary costs you need to have in mind when owning a Yorkshire terrier. Of course, they may vary upon the lifestyle you have and better said, upon how obsessed you are with your cutie.
Before buying a dog, you need to realize that this is not just a toy that will sit on the couch or the carpet doing nothing and waiting for you to find a little time to hug him.
It is a small cute creature that needs your attention and more importantly, your love.
This doesn’t mean that you need to hug and kiss your Yorkie all the time.
One hour of playtime per day is more than enough to make him feel loved and special.
Also, think about who is going to take care of your doggy when you are traveling for business trips for example.
All the things we have noted above may look a little scary to you. But believe us, they are not. If we have to measure what happiness it is to have a Yorkie at home with the cares it needs, no doubt choice is only one.
We can say that the first six months are “the most difficult” ones.
This is the time when your “child” will teach where to poo and pee, and what is allowed to chew. It will also learn that sleeping or staying home alone is not that scary.
Those are the months when a little more effort from your side will be required. But if you spend the necessary time and cares, your Yorkie will thank you for the rest of his life by making your days so pleasant and happy.
