Things To Buy For A Yorkie Puppy
Toys for Yorkies
The baby teeth of a young Yorkie start to appear when they are about three weeks old. Until the time of the fourth to sixth month (this may vary), baby teeth will be replaced by the adult teeth.
During the period of the baby teeth
, young Yorkie loves to chew everything which comes in front of their eyes and can fit into its mouth.
The most common “victims” are usually the shoes, slippers, cables, and furniture.
This can cause a lot of expenses for you. Instead of wondering if you can change the wooden legs of your chair, which have these little holes on them, you better provide another “chewing gum” to the Yorkie – enough toys.
Some producers divide their toys into two categories – for young and adult dogs. To choose the right toy, pay attention to some basic things – it shouldn’t be smaller than the doggie’s mouth, it must be chewable (textile or rubber material is fine), it shouldn’t be too hard.
The industry has not invented yet a toy that is strong enough to withstand the constant “attacks” of your little doggie, so don’t worry and just go and buy a new one, when the old toy is unusable.
Food
Just like the humans, this is the most important factor if you want your Yorkie to be strong and healthy. Make sure you buy the food that corresponds the age of the Yorkie you have.
Most brands have separated categories for very young, young and adult dogs.
The main differences come from the basic nutrients Yorkies need, corresponding to their age, weight and how much energy they spend (young Yorkies spend much more energy than the old ones).
Your local vet will help you choose the most appropriate food for your puppy and guide you on the proper quantities.
We suggest that you always double check the selected food with another vet, just to make sure you have made the right choice.

Treats
Treats must always be in your pocket if you want to start training your Yorkie from the very beginning of welcoming it at home.
It has been proven that dogs learn faster when they are awarded for doing the proper commands and habits.
An award could also be in the form of hugs and sweet talks (Yorkies love that), but you should also give some material stimulus.
Treats for young Yorkies are usually very small because their purpose is not to feed your dog, but only to reward it for the right behavior.
Yorkie beds
The bed of your Yorkie is the place where he will rest when tired from the long walks and playtime. If your home is not warm enough in the winter, we suggest beds that are not directly lying down on the floor, but those who are sitting on small legs.
That way the baby will not have direct contact with the cold floor which can cause illness. The bottom part of the bed should be soft.
Most of the Yorkshire terriers love to have beds with the lined periphery. That way they can put their head
on it and watch what is happening around them.
Choose a bed that is washable in a washing machine. That way you can easily clean it when it’s necessary.
If you are buying a bed for a baby Yorkie, it is important that it doesn’t have some small decoration parts which can be easily detached.
That could be dangerous because he can swallow them.
Little doggies are very curious and love to chew everything around them.
Some people choose to buy crates because they can be used in many different ways.
Dogs can be transported in them. Also, if you buy a comfortable mat, your Yorkie will enjoy sleeping in it. Some owners share that when their Yorkie have a fear of staying home alone, it feels much better and safe in the crate.
Detergents
Even with the treats, it will take some time until the baby learns the right places for pee and poo. So make sure you have the right products to clean your carpets, floor, and bathroom.
Young doggies will do their physiological need all around the house. And this is not because they want to make you angry, but because they are not able to hold it.
Some will agree that the most appropriate detergents for cleaning biological materials are the enzyme products because they have the feature not only to clean but also to destroy the proteins and therefore the smells.
We, on the other hand, will suggest using very light products because baby Yorkies are very delicate and there is a possibility for them to develop some kind of allergy from the strong detergents.
Usually, we use a baby washing powder. It is delicate, and it doesn’t irritate the skin of the little dog. Also, it can be used in all kind of surfaces and materials.
Just fill up a basket with warm water, pour some baby washing powder and use it until you think the water is too dirty.
Shampoo and brushes
Yorkshire terriers are known for the “hair” they have and not for the usual fur like the other dogs. It is importan
t to keep your Yorkie’s coat in a perfect color and shape. Choose the best shampoo for your hairy friend.
Using a conditioner is also recommended. There are many different shampoos and conditioners on the market you can choose from.
Here are the best shampoos for Yorkshire terriers considering the specific structure of their coat:
You can read more about shampoos and conditioners recommended by the groomers here.
We recommend bathing the Yorkie ones per week or two. If you choose to do it more often, this can result in the quick oiliness of the dog’s hair.
Remember that we do not recommend bathing your Terriers before the third month (when the last vaccine is applied).
Before that time, you can use dry shampoos to clean it up.
After the bath, it is time for to brush. For this, you will need quality brushes that will make yours and your Yorkie’s brushing experience more pleasant.
If your doggie’s hair is long, we recommend doing it every day. That way you will prevent it from matting.
And remember, brushing does not only improve the look of your dog, but it also has health benefits. One of them is the better blood supply to the skin.
Also, it will spread a fat cover that protects the skin and the hair; it nourishes them and protects it from external impacts.

Here are five top quality products that must always be at your fingertips:
Collar, dog lead, and harness
Those are accessories that your Yorkie will not get used to very quickly. You will need a little patience and treats until doggy is feeling comfortable enough with the harness and lead.
Training pads
Training pads are an essential part for the first four months of Yorkie’s life. Before applying the third vaccine, we do not recommend to let your doggy outside.
They are too sensitive and weak by that time. Use the training pads to teach the little friend to do his needs there. To help you do that, you can buy a house trainer drops that are applied over the pad. Their smell helps the puppy to find the resting area easier.
Some tips on how to prepare your home for the arrival of the Yorkie
Carpets
Make sure you remove all the small carpets from the floor.
Yorkies by nature love to do the pee and poo on a grass and soft surfaces.
Carpets are associated by the small babies for grass and soil, and that is why they love to do their needs on them.
If you have a room which is entirely covered by carpet, it is better for the little puppy not to have access to that particular place. And don’t get desperate, your doggy will soon learn where the right place for doing his job is.
Cables
Make sure to remove all the cables lying on the floor. Even though little Yorkie will have enough toys to play with, cables are an exciting “toy”, and they will surely love to play with them.
This will not only be a bad experience if you find that the TV is not working but also it can be dangerous due to the high voltages.
So put the cables high enough, out of the reach of the Yorkie. At least for the first few months until the permanent teeth come up.
Leather/ textile parts of the furniture
Not only the cables but all the soft parts of the furniture at home are a potential “victim” for the little Yorkie. We recommend that you find a way to isolate somehow and protect those parts if you want to keep them in good shape.
Bed place
Think of the perfect place where the bed of the baby will be positioned. If your home is big and the living room is far away from the bedroom, you might consider buying two beds. That way Yorkie will always be resting near you.
