What is a Puppy cut and why it is among the most popular Yorkie trims?
Maybe because this haircut is the perfect combination of pure cuteness and optimal maintenance efforts.
No matter at what age are our Yorkies, the puppy cut will surely transform them into youthful plush toys.
What we are going to talk about in this article is what a Puppy cut is and what are the advantages if we choose to trim our babies so.
Also, for the brave enough who want to try and do it themselves, we’ll go step by step through the process and give you important tips on which you must be paying attention to.
Not only that but we have also selected the best quality tools that will make you feel like real proffesional groomer:
What is a Puppy cut?
Basically, the Puppy cut is trimming the entire Yorkie’s hair to an even length. It should not be shaved completely but rather left a little longer depending on your own tastes and preferences.
Usually, if the groomers are not given any special instructions they will do it about 1 inch to a little over than 1 inch and a half long.
Furthermore, there are particular areas of the body where you might want to shorten a bit more in a way that it will be almost invisible (with no difference to the rest of the body) but will give a better look and will be easier to maintain.
The name of the hairstyle is “Puppy cut” because usually young Yorkies are trimmed in such way.
During the first visits to the groomer, they will usually do a Puppy cut to our favorite Yorkies in order to remove the baby hair.
Many of the owners then realize that if they keep their Yorkshire terrier trimmed in such a way it is very easy to maintain.
That is why we can see older Yorkies who have the Puppy cut, too.
This hairstyle is especially appropriate for the summer months when the weather gets really hot.
The Puppy cut is also very popular as a “Teddy bear cut”. They are the same thing and you should not be confused that this is a different hairstyle.
Why might you want to choose the puppy cut? Advantages of Yorkie Puppy cut.
One of the biggest advantages of the Puppy cut is that when Yorkies are trimmed that way, it is very easy to maintain their hair.
We are sure that you all love those pictures of Yorkshire terriers with the “Show trim” where the hair is left long almost touching the ground.
But this type of haircut requires so much brushing, detangling and frequent baths that not many of us can afford it.
Keeping the hair short also helps to maintain a better hygiene for our cuties. It is very easy to clean up the intimate parts where some infections may occur if they are not properly maintained.
Getting used to the grooming procedures
The Teddy bear cut is a hairstyle that can be performed fairly quickly by the professional groomers.
This is another reason it is recommended for young puppies which are not used to the long grooming procedures and sitting on the table for a longer time.
Better for the summer
As we said, during the summer months when the weather gets really hot, this hairstyle is undoubtedly very appropriate.
Handling the hot summer days
The first reason is that it obviously ensures a good airflow to the skin of the Yorkie and that way it is easier for them to handle the hot days.
Many people believe that the “Close shave” where the hair of the sweetie is completely shaved is better for the summer.
We must disagree with that opinion and here is the reason why.
Having a little bit of hair protects the body from the direct sunlight and the UV rays. It serves as kind of protection (isolation) to the skin.
The Puppy cut allows the skin to breathe during the hot summer days but because the hair is not completely shaved it also prevents the body of our canines to be directly exposed to the harmful sunlight.
Easier to find insects
The second reason why the Puppy cut is good for the warmer periods of the year is that it is much easier to see if there are some ticks, fleas or other insects on their body.
Not only it is easier to see them but it is also much easier to remove when the hair is shorter.
You can easily modify the Teddy bear cut
Another advantage of the Teddy bear cut is that you can customize and adjust it on your own preferences.
We said that the basic puppy cut is evenly trimmed hair all over the body.
Of course, there can be exceptions and you can make some parts of the body shorter or longer.
Doing so, you can easily modify the regular Teddy bear cut into a “Squared puppy cut” where the entire body is trimmed to the same length but only the head’s hair is left a little longer and the shape is squared or rounded.

Puppy’s first trim
If your Yorkie is about to be trimmed for the first time, then he is not used to sounding and working of the clippers.
In order to make him calmer, we suggest that you switch on the clippers and go over all his body without trimming.
Here are the best clippers recommended by professional groomers
Do that for a minute or two, just pretending that you are trimming because this way the cutie will get familiar with the sound of the machine.
After you see him calmer and more comfortable, you are ready to start with the real cutting.
*Always prize the doggie for a good behavior!
Start trimming the body
With the number 4 blade, you can start trimming the body. Number 4 blade will make the length of the hair about an inch long which is ideal for the perfect Puppy cut look.
Number 4 blade could be used for the entire body except for the head, legs, and the butt area.
*Keep in mind that some manufacturers use different numbers for the different length. Make sure you carefully read the instructions of the clippers first.
Again, you can choose shorter or longer but this is upon your taste. Remember that the lower the number of the blade is, the longer the hair will be.
Start trimming the body from the neck down the body following the coat’s line.
*It is always better to have someone with you helping you hold the little guy. If there is no one that can do that job for you, you can use a head collar or grooming restraint to make sure you have all the control over the puppy.
The area around the neck
Continue to the neck area and make sure to go all the way around. Do not forget to trim under his chin, too.
The belly area
After the back and neck are done, you can move forward to the belly area. The best is if you can hold your Yorkie’s front paws and lift them up.
That way you will have better exposure to the entire belly.
Here some people prefer to trim just a little shorter using the number 7 and 7F blade.
While clipping the back end, hold the Yorkshire terrier’s tail up or on the side.
Again, we recommend that you use the number 7 blade here. It is important that this part of the body is always clean and tidy.
Keeping it slightly shorter will help you maintain it that way.
To make the legs perfect you can first do them with the clippers. It is up to you which blade (number 4 or number 7) you will use.
You can start with number 4 and then switch to number 7 if you are not satisfied with the first one.
For best results use the thinning scissors in order to make the perfect shape of the legs and paws.
If this is the first meeting of the puppy with the scissors, make sure to get him familiar with them following the same procedure we explained above for the clippers.
Just pretend that you are scissoring so he can get used to the noise.
To make the tail, use the comb to brush the hair outwards. Cut the hair of the tail with the thinning scissors until you make it clean and tidy.
You can continue down the way on the back part of the legs and form them nicely with the thinners.
Face and Eyes
Now, this is a very tricky area and you need to pay extra attention while cutting. As it could not be done with the clippers, you need you use the scissors.
In order to keep the doggie still, hold the hairs just beneath his chin.
With the thinners or with the round tip scissors, cut the area around the eyes to make them clean and neat. Make sure the sweetie is calm and comfortable.
Move a bit upwards and clean up/ shorten his visor to the desired length.
While you are still holding the hairs beneath his chin, you can do the area around his nose and muzzle.
To shape his face, use the straight scissors. Now, if the sweetie is not calm enough and you cannot be precise with the straights, it is better to get back to the thinners.
The ears are an important part of the Yorkie’s head. They need to be cleaned and shaped properly.
The thinning scissors might be helpful to use in order to clean all the hairs around them.
Do not forget to cut and clean them inside.
We are sure that you’ve noticed how the ears of all Yorkies have a triangle shape on their upper part.
Basically, you must shave almost one-third of the hair on the upper part of the ear and follow the natural shape.
The number 10 blade will do good for this part of the body.
